Spreading the Word

Now that “Learning Later, Living Greater” has been published and is available for purchase, it’s time to start spreading the word about it. It’s time for me to become a full-time promoter, marketer, call it what you will. I have to begin “hawking” my book. This is definitely stepping outside my comfort zone.

I’ve never been comfortable with “sales.” Years ago, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as a young wife and mother I sold “timesharing,” real estate. I got my real estate license because my first husband thought it was the perfect field for me, something that would mesh well with raising a family. Although I liked the product – vacations – the sales part of it was not fun for me. I did it though for several years but was glad to “hang it up.”

Now, once again, I’m being called on to get back into sales. But, since my book is published by a small press who don’t have the resources for a large sales campaign, it’s up to me to spread the word. And, since I truly believe in the message of the book – lifelong learning for older adults changes and enhances their later lives – I’ve giving it my best shot.

So everyday I’m sending out emails to newspapers and magazines, making phone calls, thinking up ways to promote the book – in short I’m a one-man sales force. My son, the co-author of the book, is out straight right now finishing up two other books, so he can’t help much. It’s really up to me.

What’s fun though, is that I never know who might be emailing or calling me. I’ve had some interesting and wonderful responses to all my work, and that’s very rewarding. Every day brings a fresh new challenge, real intellectual growth, and right now things are very busy and certainly not boring.

My First Speaking Engagement

The evening of September 14th, the night of my first speaking engagement, turned out to be rainy and rather miserable. But, that didn’t deter about 40 hearty New Hampshire folks who turned out to hear me talk about the Why – the How - the What. Why I wrote the book, How it went from a dream to a reality, and What it’s all about.

The Friends of the Sleeper-Minot Library in Bristol, NH did a great job of publicizing the event. There were press releases, posters in the windows of local businesses, and of course the big marquee. Not knowing what to expect in the way of a turnout, and the audience reaction to my book, were probably the most anxiety-producing parts of this whole event.

I awoke that morning with big-time butterflies but a good walk took care of them, and I made sure the rest of the day was very low-key. I did all my errands and other tasks the day before, freeing me up to stay calm, cool and collected on the day of my talk.

My strategy worked and at 6:30 off we drove to the Masonic Hall in Bristol. Once we arrived, I became a bit nervous, but the adrenaline was useful in pumping me up for the talk. Given the weather I wasn’t sure anyone would show up, but once they started coming in, I knew I would be talking to more than just a handful of people.

I had been preparing for the talk for quite a few weeks. I even had a few props, including an apple and a funny poster. Things went very well, there were a few laughs, a good many questions at the end, and then we sold and autographed books. It turned out to be a fun time, complete with coffee and pastries, and I met many very nice people who were incredibly supportive.

I’ve attached a few pictures of the evening to give you an idea of what it was like. That’s Hubby helping me out with sales. Now that I know I’ve got the right formula for my talks, I feel more confident about doing more in the future.
