Bridging the Cultural Divide

In early November I was invited to talk to a group of Japanese women about lifelong learning. They were in this country taking an Elderhostel program. During the program they visited a beautiful continuing care community, the Lathrop Retirement Community, a Kendal Corporation affiliate, in Easthampton, Massachusetts. I drove out to Easthampton to meet them before they went off to explore the Norman Rockwell Museum.

After a delightful lunch, I spoke with the group for about 20 minutes through an interpreter. Since I had sent her my talk ahead of time, she was ready to work with me. After each section I would pause and wait for her to interpret what I had just said. That was very different from what I usually do but very interesting.

The audience was most responsive and even asked questions, again through the interpreter. At the end about half a dozen came up and presented me with little gifts, which is a Japanese custom.

My office is now decorated with some new items – wall hangings, Origami dolls and several beautiful scarves. What a delight to look around and be reminded of my time with these visitors from Japan.

Brown Bag Lunch Series

I was honored to be asked to be the luncheon speaker at the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Tufts University near Boston in late October.

It was the perfect opportunity for me to talk about the “learning in retirement” movement both in the U.S. and around the world. After discussing what’s happening in the United States, we took a whirlwind, around-the-world tour of a dozen different countries, touching on what was happening there with later-life learning.

Along with that, I briefly discussed the why and how of my book, “Learning Later, Living Greater: The Secret for Making the Most of Your After-50 Years.” Sold a few copies too!

Thank you OLLI for giving me the opportunity to talk with your members. It’s always a lot of fun, being inspired by the membership.
